Central Catholic High School is a college preparatory school whose history dates back from 1938 when Archbishop Edward D.Howard sought funds to build an all-boys catholic classroom. He wanted to do this with Christ the King as the patron of the school. The first classroom, library, and recreation room were all dedicated as part of the archdiocese centennial celebration on May 9, 1939. In attendance during the dedication was the Archbishop along the apostolic delegates Amleto Cicognani blessed and dedicated the school.
The classes begun on September 5, 1939 and the first graduation that involved 17 students took place 1942. In 1980 the school was coed. The first students who graduated after the school was coed were 91 boys and 30 girls, and this took place in 1983.
The mission of the school is currently stated as; a school committed to educate students from diverse background in catholic community, challenging each individual to live as a Christian witness to others. This institution is located along the SE stark street in Portland next to Laurelhurst theatre.
Currently the school is headed by John Harrington, 66 years old being the president. He is being assisted by John Garrow as the principal. Aron Homberg on the hand is the dean of students.
The richness in co-curriculum activities is among the things that make the institution an exceptional experience. For instance in athletics it has an outstanding tradition in Mt. Hood participation in the 18 sports offered in the institution. Since 1945, athletes have participated in 50 state finals, winning 26 state championships. Among the sports offered in the school include; baseball, football, swimming and basketball.
Apart from active participation in game and sports, the school also offers other activities such as publication groups. This group is purely meant to aid in teaching aspiring journalists an opportunity to write articles. This is done through the school newspaper, the award-winning year book and the literary magazine. The school newspaper also called the RAMPART, is published throughout the year.
In addition to these, the school’s fraternity is so hospitable and so welcoming. It is dedicated to offering catholic education to every person regardless their socio-economic background. They believe that it is not a parental privilege to have their children learn in the school but rather a catholic privilege to teach the young Christians. Catholic college is focused in making Christian education accessible to everyone willing to get it and diversifying it.
The school is also blessed to have some of the students receiving funds from outsiders and well-wishers. For example in the academic year 2011-2012 the school received over $ 2 181 000 in financial aid and tuition assistance to students. In addition to this; half of the students receive academic assistance in the form of grants, scholarships and financial aid.
The majority of the school population is made up of Catholics who make up to 75%. The 27% are non-Catholics but remain respected.
